The Dubai Lamp: “World’s Most Efficient” LED Light Bulb
Back in October of 2016, the partnership of Dubai Municipality and Philips Lighting released their Dubai Lamp, a series of the “world’s most efficient commercially available” LED light bulbs. This past Sunday, May 7, two Dubai developers signed a deal for the installation of these Dubai Lamps for their upcoming projects.
Dubai is a city-state located in the country of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). For a visual, the UAE is located at the tip of the Arabian Peninsula, neighboring Saudi Arabia and Omen. The partnership between Philips and Dubai Municipality began as an initiative by Dubai for the commitment of sustainability. It is Dubai’s goal to seek a 30% cut in their energy consumption by 2030, as well as a reduction of carbon emissions by 16% in the year 2021.
Through their partnership, Philips Lighting and Dubai Municipality created the Dubai Lamp, a light bulb that is said to decrease an electricity bill by 90%. According to a press release on Philips Lighting website, this is the world’s first commercially available light bulb that produces 200 lumen per watt. The Dubai Lamp comes in 4 different light bulb varieties:
- 1 Watt, equivalent to 25W incandescent light bulb. Lifetime = 15,000 hours, or 15 years based on 1,000 hours a year.
- 2 Watt, equivalent to 40W incandescent light bulb. Lifetime = 15,000 hours, or 15 years based on 1,000 hours a year.
- 3 Watt, equivalent to 60W incandescent light bulb. Lifetime = 15,000 hours, or 15 years based on 1,000 hours a year.
- 3 Watt Spot light bulb, equivalent to 35W or 50W halogen light bulb. Lifetime = 25,000 hours, or 25 years based on 1,000 hours a year.
All 4 light bulbs are available in warm white tone and cool daylight, and last 15 times longer than your conventional light bulb. Even though it is said to be the “world’s most efficient commercially available” LED light bulb, the Dubai Lamp is applicable in households as well as businesses.
Throughout this year alone, Philips Lighting and Dubai Municipality are preparing, for market-use, 2 million of these Dubai Lamps. That number is said to increase to 10 million by the year 2021.
The 4-year deal that was signed this past Sunday with Emaar and Dubai Properties Group to integrate the Dubai Lamps in their new facilities is said to include a study conducted by Dubai Municipality to monitor the energy savings that the Dubai Lamp is said to achieve.
Developer Emaar is known for building the world’s tallest tower, the Burj Khalifa, as well as the Dubai Mall, one of the world’s largest shopping centers. Dubai Properties Group is a well-established real estate developer, known for numerous Dubai destinations including Jumeirah Beach Residences (JBR), Dubailand, Business Bay, and Culture Village, among other housing and retail spaces.
